
A light comes on, your stomach drops, and then you spend a few seconds trying to remember if it’s the neutral indicator or something that needs attention right now. The dashboard isn’t being vague on purpose; it just doesn’t have many words to work with.
Knowing which symbol demands immediate action and which one is basically saying “hi” is the real skill. Your owner’s manual is the authoritative source for your specific bike, but these patterns hold across most bikes.
Start by separating indicators from warnings. Status indicators (neutral gear, high beam, turn signals) confirm a state, while warning lights require an actual response: oil pressure, engine management, coolant temperature, ABS, traction control, charging system. Not every motorcycle has all of these, but the ones that do require more than a mental note.
Most lights flash briefly at startup as part of a self-check and then go out, so what matters is whether a light clears when it should or stays on when it shouldn’t.
It usually looks like a small oil can, sometimes with a drop falling from the spout. Most commonly red, though some bikes show it in amber.
The motorcycle oil light signals low oil pressure, which isn’t the same as a low oil level. Low oil is one possible cause, but a clogged filter, a failing pump, worn bearing surfaces, or a faulty sensor can all trigger it too. The light alone can’t tell you which; that requires diagnostics.
When pressure drops, the oil film thins and metal-to-metal contact becomes a real risk. If it’s on with the engine running, stop and check the level. If the level looks fine and the warning persists, get it diagnosed. Riding through a genuine pressure fault is how you end up at a major engine repair or an engine rebuild.
On most bikes, it’s a small engine outline, a simplified side-view of a combustion engine block. Usually amber or yellow, and often labeled “CHECK” or “FI” (fuel injection) on older or simpler dashboards.
The motorcycle check engine light means the onboard diagnostic system caught something it didn’t like, though it won’t tell you which component or how bad, just that something’s off. That information lives in the fault codes, which a scan tool, dealer tool, or blink code sequence can pull up depending on the make and model.
Common triggers include fuel delivery problems, throttle position sensor faults, oxygen sensor issues, crankshaft position sensor errors, ignition faults, and emissions anomalies. Oxygen sensors can degrade from carbon deposits or silicone contamination, and sensor manufacturers document both as failure paths. Fouled spark plugs are another overlooked trigger, and if you’ve recently dropped the bike, check whether a connector got jostled under the tank.
Some faults are minor, while others worsen with continued riding, and the light doesn’t say which, so get it read. Intermittent warnings that clear after a restart are worth chasing, because the fault code may still be logged even after the indicator goes out.
The coolant temperature icon is typically a thermometer sitting in wavy lines (representing liquid), usually red. The ABS warning is almost always the letters “ABS” inside a circle. The charging warning is often a rectangle with a plus and minus terminal (a battery outline) or, in some cases, a plug symbol; both tend to appear in red or amber.
On liquid-cooled bikes, the coolant temperature warning means the engine exceeded its normal operating range. Low coolant, a stuck thermostat, fan failure, or a blocked radiator are all possible culprits, but the light names the condition, not the failed part, so stop and let things cool. The ABS warning behaves differently. On many ABS-equipped motorcycles, it illuminates at key-on and stays lit until the bike reaches a minimum speed, which is normal. That threshold varies significantly by manufacturer: Yamaha specifies 10 km/h on several models, Honda’s X-ADV requires 30 km/h, and KTM’s 390 Adventure clears at around 6 km/h. If it stays on past that threshold, the ABS system isn’t seeing the expected input; possible causes include a wheel-speed sensor, wiring, tone ring, voltage, or ABS-control fault. On many systems, conventional braking still works while ABS may not, so check the owner’s manual for the specifics.
On motorcycles equipped with a charging-system warning, the fault can sit anywhere in the chain: stator, regulator/rectifier, connectors, or wiring. When a battery keeps dying, the cause isn’t always the charging system, since the battery itself (worn, sulfated) or a parasitic drain can look identical, and the distinction matters for how you fix it.
If the motorcycle oil light or a temperature warning comes on, pull over as soon as it’s safe, since both can signal conditions that cause serious engine damage fast. For a persistent motorcycle check engine light, ABS fault, or charging warning, whether to keep riding depends on the warning, the bike’s behavior, and what the manufacturer says. Rideable doesn’t mean fine.
Skip the light-color shorthand. Color conventions vary enough across manufacturers that red-as-critical and amber-as-advisory isn’t a reliable rule, and knowing what the dashboard lights mean on your specific model matters more. Note what the bike was doing when it lit up, especially when something appears and quietly disappears, since that context speeds up diagnostics.
When a warning appears, note which symbol came on, whether it held solid or flashed, and whether any other indicators activated. Photograph the dashboard while the light is visible if you can, because some warnings disappear after a restart and won’t show up again during a shop inspection, even though the diagnostic system may still hold the fault.
